  • JUNK!!!!

    Returned immediately. Could not get my computer to even recognize it was installed with Windows XP! Web support was useless. Move on to another one!

  • Do not waste your money

    I have had this drive for just under a year now, and it is dead. I have two friends who both have the same drive, and both of theirs have died in under a year. This drive is a waste of money. I will not buy WD again.

  • Easy to install and use

    Just connect the portable hard drive to the desktop computer using the supplied USB cable and it installs itself. Saved a couple test files and everything checked out fine. Disconnected it and hooked it up to my wife's laptop computer and, again, it installed itself. Very happy with it!

  • WD is a solid product

    This unit is a solid performer. It has plenty of storage room. The unit is easy to remove from the package and setup. It does not require a strong technical background to use. While no backup device is completely resistant to failure I feel secure with loading important data on it. This is the 4th WD for our family and all are functioning very well.The oldest one is 4 years and it has shown no sign of a problem. 2 units are used for a college student to backup files from a laptop.I recommend this unit to others.

  • Never again

    Yeah its cheap, but you get what you pay for. I've had my drive for 2 months and it crashed on me last week. This was my primary storage for 50gb of photos. 3/4 of which I had backed up on CD's. It just quick working. It won't boot up to the computer. I'm very unhappy about it. So I've completely lost about 10gb of photographs.

  • easy to handle, runs as expected

    easy to use as back-up disc or as frequently accessed external HDD. Not sure about the speed, but access times don't make a measurable difference when it comes to private usage only.

  • Worth the money

    I bought this HD to replace my 80GB HD that I've had for 5 years and it's working great so far. The installation was easy. All I had to do was plug it in and wait for the PC to recognize it. I've had it for 2 month now and I haven't had any problems with it so far.

  • Great external HD.

    I've enjoyed using this external HD since I got it about a month ago. I've put tons of pictures, video, documents, etc on it and still have probably 85% of storage space available. The only complaint I have is that it is a little large but, I expected that so I do not consider that to be a problem.

  • One of the best!

    for the price, storage capacity and overall ease of use, this is one of the best, albeit outdated, external hard drives around. i got it on sale over the cyber monday sale and it is by far one of the best tech purchases i've made. as far as external hard drives go, it does not get any simpler than this. you plug it and start backing up files. that's it. it isn't branded as "portable" so don't bother complaining about having to plug it into a power source. that really isn't an issue. it's a simple adapter and you plug it. how hard could that be? and since it is close to impossible to use a pc without a power source (nearby) then i really don't see how that would be much of an issue, whether you're using a desktop or laptop, and especially for the former. so that last bit was just a reaction to some people complaining about the power source. the product itself is simply perfect for people who need a backup storage device. but it, use it, enjoy it.

  • Very dissapointing....

    This was my 4th WD external drive. The first one to crash. However i have only had the drive for 2 months when it did. Talked to western digital customer service every level of customer service agent, with no help on my data other than send it back and we will send you a new one. To recover my data had to pay money, did that, data go recovered to another western digital drive my dumb a.. bought My Book Essential 3.0 usb another story to come. Got data recovered to that one. Overall the wd elements looks good but appearances can be deceiving. It completely stopped working on me after two months and had zero help from western digital. Absolutely disappointing besides the fact that it makes brand unreliable.

  • Good Until Now

    It worked great for a year exactly, now It is broken and it cannot be fixed. so $120 bucks down the drain ( the price when I brought it). If I can help it I am not going to get another WD again. The files was easy to store and It was very easy to back up files. It freed up space on my computer. But after a year with no complaints it just stopped working.

    I use the hard drive connected to my airport extreme for time machine backups and it works excellent. Its fairly quite and the retrieve time is excellent for the price.

    Stopped working a few months after, called WD and was told they would replace it for free. But if i wanted the data off of it i would have to use there third party. The cost would be $65 and then $700 to $1200

  • You will lose everything!

    I had this HD for a month & it began to make a clicking sound, then it died... it can't be recognized in any computer, and recovering my info would be pricey, a $1,000.00 dlls pricey. So invest in a better HD...

  • Great product for computer storage

    I'm in the IT field so of course we share info about the latest and best products available. I'm currently unemployed and in School at DeVry so it was a money issue as well as me needing more storage for my laptop. My professor told us about how reliable Western Digital products are, so the opportunity arrived and the unit was on sale at a very reasonable price so I purchased it and I'm very pleased. I would highly recommend this product.

  • Excellent in almost all aspects

    This item is advertised as being compatible with pc and mac, "FOR FLEXIBLE OPTIONS AND USE WITH MORE THAN 1 COMPUTER" a total lie! I took this to mean that I would be able to plug and play seamlessly between my pc and my mac but when I connected it to my mac I got a dialog box saying that the unit was locked and that it could not be modified and that was a big disappointment for me since I wanted to use it with my 2 computers without reformatting; I had to take it to GEEK SQUAD and of course it had to be reformatted; aside from that it is a great storage expansion to my mac

  • Set It And Forget It

    Ran out of space on my 250GB external hard drive. Something I thought I would never do. Found this great deal on the WD 1TB external hard drive. It plug and play. Easy to use. So easy a Caveman can do it. I have always had good luck with Western Digital hardware, and this external hard drive continues to live up to WD's excellent reputation.     I bought it online when it was on sale. I kept buying flash drives for backup and the expense became more than what I paid for this external Hard Drive. It was easy to install, basically Plug & Play. No more worries of losing anything. Highly recomended

  • Just a big flash drive

    I had an hp SimpleSave drive that has extremely user friendly built-in software that basically automatically backs up ones computer and automates the updating process. Unfortunately it suddenly died after 11 months of use. Dissatisfied with the reliability of my hp I bought this as a replacement. This had no built in software or program to assist in back up. All it is is a big storage folder. One can copy files into this like one would a small flash drive with Windows Explorer. I tried the Windows back up software and some that I found online, but none of them worked too well. They either took up to a week to do the back up or would arbitrarily disconnect and restart, nullifying the hours or days of back up that had already taken place. Last night I exchanged my dead hp for a replacement. It is backing up my laptop as I write this. I hope this one survives.

  • Perfect for extra storage.

    It is good for extra storage, but since it needs a separate power supply, it is easier for this to be stationary. If you want something that's portable, get one with only USB hookup. Since I needed something for storing photos, etc at home, this works out perfect!

  • Great external HD to make space on my laptop!

    I was looking for an external HD to move pictures, songs, etc. to so that my laptop would run faster. My friend recommended Western Digital and I'm glad I took her advice! 1 TB is more than I'll probably ever use, but I'm glad that I have plenty of room to grow if I choose to (without having to buy another HD).

  • Worked Great and Then Problems!

    I purchased this drive in Jan, 2010. Broughti t to the office hooked it up and plugged it in and it self-installed. Love that it's Password protected! I used it only for full system backup 24/7/365. The process is seamless. It automatically backs up files when the are added or changed and you are never even aware of it. I loved it!! Then . . . August 10 . . . my HP did its weekly "system health" analysis and found a large corrupt sector on the drive. I performed a separate "full test" of the drive and was unable to completed it due to the corrup sector. Contacted Western Digital to determine if I could reformat (which I knew would wipe out the software). They said "Yes" and that most likely it would resolve the issue, however, the software would be eliminated and the only way to perform a backup would be with Windows Backup (not acceptable). After another week of testing I returned it to the store and got a full refund and purchased another drive.. I do not recommend the purchase of this drive.

  • Works right out of the box!

    Needed an external hardrive to back up all my music, school projects, and notes from class. This by far is the best investment I've made for school thus far. Running Mac OS X, it runs with time machine automatically. The product is quiet and runs quick.

    This epic piece of junk died after the second use. I was copying files to it and it just lost the connection. I had already transferred several things to it and deleted them and now they are gone. Th connection for the usb on the external hard drive is flimsy. The case is thin and seems very breakable. The power cord is an ok length, but it does not plug into an outlet very tightly. Epic piece of junk.

  • Great Product

    My product arrived on time the day it said it would. I was able to easily install it and it has not given me any problems. I have no complaints so far and I am very happy with the product. The only downside is I dont really like that you have to plug it into a wall, but that really doesnt matter. It's a very small issue. It would have been nice if it could charge from the computer.

    Read a lot of reviews about this product and the software that came with it. I was all ready to pull that software per instructions, but instead, when I hooked it up my Mac detected it and asked if I wanted to use it for Time Machine. This is exactly what I wanted this drive for so I was pretty excited. I haven't had it for long, but it has worked flawlessly.

  • Price is right

    This drive is priced really well - the cheapest terabyte I could find. It is certainly not portable - as it is fairly large and requires its own power supply - but perfect for extra storage or backup at home or in the office. The only other complaint I would have is that it is not formatted for the Mac and the directions provided for doing so are poor. This is an easy process, but certainly not obvious to all users.

    As long as you don't mind plugging in the over-sized adapter for this thing to operate, you should be fine. This takes away its portability, though. I guess as long as you just need extra hard drive space for your desktop, you should be great.

    It's a really good Hard Drive, to me is the best brand and it's really quite with a pretty good size. You can use either for mac or pc so it's cool. The prize is really good too.
